12/4's Semi Final Game

posted August 13, 2017 by Debbie Frankenberg - viewed 233 times

I was honoured to be asked to fill in as coach. Coach Fynn, who is only 15 and done a great job taking on the responsibility of coaching and getting the 12/4’s to the Semi Finals, was too ill to lead the team.

It’s a big ask to have the girls go from having a really nice coach to an old one who sets high expectations AND yells a lot of directives. Congratulations to these lovely young ladies who managed to overcome the trauma of having me and fulfil my expectations.

Our first quarter was peppered with a good intercept, strong drive, here and there – just not enough to take control. Halos pulled away from us in the first quarter with a 6 goal lead. Our second quarter was much stronger and Halos struggled to get goals. Ooooh…. I liked that!

The girls got better as the game progressed and by the last quarter, I was out of my chair and getting very excited by the team’s performance. Great intercepts, strong leads, balancing the channels (remember the raft and the sharks girls!), clearing out of the circle allowing for passes into the front space, and best of all … everybody working together. It took a little while to use my back line throw in sequence but you did it and you did it well!

I am very impressed with your attitude girls! You took up my challenge, implementing the things that I asked of you. Congratulations on stepping up and pushing yourselves harder every quarter because it really showed in the last half of your game.

We struggled to get goals, but that kind of thing happens at Finals. I loved the fact that nobody quit. THAT is a testament to every girl in this team. Super effort!

Congratulations to Lucy who was awarded BOC because of the integral part she played in the transition from defence to attack. Without fail, you were my second phase drive from the backline throw in. Loved it! You all deserved a BOC award today because there wasn’t much left in the tank at the final whistle and you all gave me 100%.

Anyone who has had me as a coach will tell you that if you give me 100% effort for 100% time on court, I’m happy. Girls … I was very happy with your performance!

Final score 17-11. We were closer than you think because that 6 goal difference was in the first quarter.  Outstanding effort!

Sorry I couldn't get you through to the next round but thanks for having me. xo

Fynn … get well soon. You have done a great job with the girls. xo
